The Georgia Department of Labor (GDOL) will host another “Ask Ted” (Type, Explore, Discover) online chat on Wednesday, May 30. The chat will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the GDOL website www.dol.state.ga.us.

Entitled “Online Job Search,” the 90-minute chat will focus on job seekers needing advice, tips, and techniques on conducting an effective online job search. A panel of experts will be available to discuss the use of the electronic media to enhance an applicant’s job search.

Discussion will center on the dos and don’ts of completing an online job application and information on how to implement an effective online-job search.

A state job-training center in central Pennsylvania has a new course for manufacturing positions that may soon be implemented throughout the state.

The program, designed to close the “skills gap,” will be short and affordable.

It may also be a model to use throughout the state.

The state job-training center, Pennsylvania Careerlink of Lancaster County is launching a new kind of class that’s two weeks long and combines several types of training.

Enrollees will be able to learn basic math and reading skills, technical know-how, workplace etiquette and communication skills.

U-S Assistant Secretary of Labor Jane Oates says the Lancaster County Careerlink may be pioneering a new type of pre-employment training program, said Jane Oates, assistant secretary of the U.S. Department of Labor.

“The academics of career readiness, plus the soft skills, plus the pre-vocational training, that’s the three-legged stool,” Oates said. “And I think, probably, every Careerlink has at least two of those legs. I don’t know that anybody has put all three legs together.”

A state Department of Labor and Industry official says it may not be long before the same three-prong approach is used throughout Pennsylvania.

THURSDAY, May 17 (HealthDay News) — It was the small square photo clipped to an applicant’s resume that most influenced whether a woman would be hired. But there was a hidden catch: The pictures showed the same six women both before and after weight-loss surgery.

The end result: The “employers” in the study rated these six women more poorly when their photos were taken when they were obese.

For the research, published recently in the International Journal of Obesity, the 95 raters actually were New Zealand undergraduate students who weren’t aware that weight bias was the real focus of the study.

“Clearly, these were not actual employers,” said study co-author Janet Latner, an associate professor of psychology at the University of Hawaii. “But……….. continues on U.S. News & World Report.

During a campaign stop in St. Petersburg on May 16, 2012, Mitt Romney said he intended to make government work better and save money in the process.

As an example, he cited the federal government’s efforts to provide job training.

“Do you know how many federal job training programs there are? 49 different federal job training programs that report to eight agencies,” he said.

Romney said he would look to consolidate programs and send them to the states.

“I want to take those dollars, put them together and give them to the state of Florida and say, ‘You create the program that’s best for your own people, that puts people to work.’ “

We had never heard that there were “49 different federal jobs programs,” so we decided to check it out.

We asked the Romney campaign for evidence, but we didn’t hear back. Our own research eventually led us to independent reports from the U.S. Government Accountability Office, a respected independent agency that investigates how the federal government spends money.

JACKSON, Miss. — Mississippi Valley State University President Donna Oliver shouldn’t be affected by her unsuccessful bid for a college presidency in another state, Higher Education Commissioner Hank Bounds said.

“The fact of the matter is that there are openings all the time, and leaders are always being sought out, so I don’t see this having a big impact on Dr. Oliver,” Bounds told The Clarion-Ledger (http://on.thec-l.com/J4sF0q ) on Sunday.

Oliver has been at Valley since 2009. She was one of three finalists to lead West Virginia State University, but officials announced last week that she didn’t get the job.

Cleavon Smith, president of the Valley alumni chapter in Tupelo, said he doesn’t think Oliver’s attempt to get another job will affect her ability to lead.

“I think she’s a good leader. You have those that think she’s not a good leader and will continue to feel that way,” Smith said.

Enrollment at Valley dropped 4.2 percent from 2010 to 2011, while enrollment at Mississippi’s seven other public universities increased 5.2 percent.
